Title taken from the TS Eliot poem, Wasteland, which he wrote while convalescing after a “nervous breakdown.” This painting was completed following an ICU admission for anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction to a drug that was administered). Speaks to our attempts to offset our own ruins by building our lives back with the ‘fragments’ that remain, preserving ourselves against further destruction. There were many who attempted to “swoop in” and save the day, reflected in the flying pig. Ultimately, a meditation on self-reliance and finding supportive ground even as the water threatens to drown.
